India is getting a Centre of Excellence for online gaming - Here is all you need to know
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced in a new statement this Friday during his visit to Shillong that India’s first Centre of Excellence for online gaming will be in Shillong. And, it will happen by March 2023. This new project will be established as an advanced facility of the National Institute of Electronics and IT (NIELIT), Shillong. According to his statement, this establishment will approximately be a campus of 10 acres and train the youth of North-East India in relevant digital skills.
He also talked about the plans of the Central Government to relaunch Skill India to train 50,000 Meghalaya’s youth in skills that are future-ready and have industry-backed job opportunities. This project will be a part of the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and developed under it.
This centre will be set up by the Digital India Startup Hub through the Software Technology Parks of India. This centre is expected to be a catalyst for startups and entrepreneurs based in North-East India to make them capable of creating an environment which is suitable for next-generation online gaming.
The main purpose behind setting up this centre of excellence will be to promote the digital ecosystem of online gaming in North-east India. Chandrashekhar further said that it is the vision of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the upcoming wave of startups and entrepreneurs must come from parts of North-East India such as Shillong, and Kohima.
In the announcement, Chandrashekhar said that the government of India firmly believes that providing the youth of North-East India with the appropriate digital skills is necessary for them to get better employment and business opportunities in the rapidly growing digital economy.
Chandrashekhar emphasized on the importance of having the necessary digital skills post the COVID pandemic. The rate of digitalization of things like products, services, and more has increased significantly worldwide and continues to increase even today.
