Women esports Industry and female players
On this International Women’s Day, let’s all come together and celebrate the hard-working and efficient women in the esports Industry. Women worldwide are not less than men, be it in athletic sports or esports gaming. In recent times, there has been a constant rise of professional female esports players that stream, play and participate in tournaments, showcasing their skills and understanding of the game.
However, female players have to face a lot of discrimination, difficulties, and challenges in the esports industry. In this article, let’s talk about the growing number of female players in esports and how discrimination plays a role in their confidence. Furthermore, the article will also highlight the role of the Indian esports industry in improving the condition and encouraging female esports players in the industry.
Increasing female esports players in India
As compared to 2021, there has been a rise in female esports players in India. Even though male players constitute more than 150 thousand players than the female population, there has been a significant rise. According to various reports by Statista, the female esports industry in India is on the rise, with several female players joining the community. Streamers, gaming content creators, and professional players are increasing in number, showcasing and representing women in the esports industry. Compared to the world, most female esports players belong to South Korea, followed by China and the USA. India is improving their number of female players with support from established esports organisations.
Discrimination female players face in the esports Industry
It is not new to the condition of women in the world, with the discrimination and difficulties they face. In the esports industry, female players and streamers face a similar issue. According to authentic reports by Evil Geniuses, a prominent esports reporting organisation, female players face a lot of discrimination and harassment. Several female players disguise their identity in games, encouraging their characters to look masculine.
Furthermore, they often disable their microphones so as not to hear unjust and harassing comments from audiences and other male players. Furthermore, audiences and fans often judge the integrity of a tournament if it is all-female or includes female rosters. This discrimination has been in the esports industry for a long time, which degrades and demotivates the confidence of talented female players.
Indian esports community on improving the condition of female esports players
With advancements in the mentality of people in the esports industry, several Indian esports organisations are providing their efforts to improve the condition of women in the esports industry. Recently, the Indian esports industry helped the Grandslam event in Prayagraj Maidan, New Delhi. With AMD and SkyEsports as sponsors, they held the first-ever all-female Valorant LAN tournament. It was a first of its kind in India, allowing female Valorant players to showcase their talents and skills. 15 female players attended the tournament, with Grace Esports lifting the trophy.
The President of India, Smt Draupadi Murmu, also attended the event, showing the Indian government’s support for female players in the esports community. Furthermore, the famous esports organisation Global Esports are looking forward to introducing new female rosters to their team, allowing and encouraging female players to improve and enhance their gaming skills.
