Highlights:
* Assassin’s Creed Shadows has left fans fuming due to its choice of protagonist and price range.
* Players are unhappy that they are not getting a finished product after Ubisoft revealed that they have two expansions planned for the future.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows won’t be arriving until the next six months but it has already gained significant heat from gamers. The successor to Mirage left fans disappointed with its World Premiere trailer while some decisions by Ubisoft compounded the hatred. People can’t help but notice the reception given to the upcoming title in a fan-favorite franchise that featured iconic characters like Ezio Auditore, Altair Ibn-La’Ahad, and Edward Kenway.

Yasuke Is The Biggest Reason For The Whole Assassin’s Creed Shadows Controversy
Yasuke, one of the protagonists in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, is based on a historical figure of African origin who served Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period. Historical records mention that Yasuke was a retainer for Nobunga, a slave samurai providing military services, whereas the game portrayed the character as a different kind of samurai.
This isn’t the only problem. Ubisoft has a history of making legendary figures fit their version of history, for instance, Margaret Thatcher is a Templar, and Niccolo Machiavelli is a member of the Assassin order according to Assassin’s Creed’s lore. Similarly, Yasuke’s actual history will be mixed with fiction. Ubisoft even noted there are plenty of questions and speculation surrounding Yasuke so why did they choose the character in the first place?
Gamers also believe that an African-origin protagonist has been chosen for ‘representation’ rather than exploring his ‘history.’ They could have chosen any Japanese samurai like Hanzo Hattori. Ubisoft’s need for representation in their games was further proved by their blog on the dual protagonists in which they confirmed that both characters will romantically “attract and be attracted to different types of people.”
The Opening Of Pre-Orders Without Proper Gameplay Footage
Ubisoft continued its notoriety run when it opened pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed Shadows without providing any gameplay footage in the World Premier launched on May 15. Assassin’s Creed Shadows reveal trailer broke the series record for most dislikes, partly because of the controversy regarding Yasuke and partly because there was no information on what players can experience in the game.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage was complimented for the design and density of Baghdad which made parkour even more fun. As such, fans were hyped about the upcoming game after getting news that it would be set in Japan, expecting to see gameplay similar to Ghost of Tsushima. Witnessing no gameplay in the official reveal trailer was a bummer for longtime Assassin’s Creed fans.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Insane Price & Plans
FromSoftware is praised for releasing complete games such as the award-winning Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and only developing DLCs and expansions depending on the demand. Such a tradition is becoming increasingly rare. Ubisoft has two planned expansion packs which can be pre-purchased by acquiring the Gold Edition or the Ultimate Edition of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The insane price of Assassin’s Creed Shadows Ultimate Edition even had Asmongold shocked. “You buy the game and You don’t even get everything in the game?”, was a valid point made by the streamer as he voiced fans concerns’ of Ubisoft making its games pricier than usual.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will also be part of the Infinity platform. The upcoming game hub for the Assassin’s Creed series will feature multiple microtransactions and we can clearly notice where the company is heading with its plans.
