Highlights:
* Popular Jujutsu Kaisen characters like Gojo and Yuta deserve a spin-off manga.
* Spin-off mangas can add to the character lore and provide more backstory.
Gege Akutamu’s Jujutsu Kaisen has been one of the most popular ongoing shonen, deservedly winning the 2024 Anime of the Year award for Season 2. MAPPA Studios has done a brilliant job in adapting the manga for television screens. While the anime series is expecting a Season 3 release, the manga seems to be in its final saga, featuring the ultimate showdown of 20-Finger Sukuna against Yuji and Yuta.
Jujutsu Kaisen has no spin-off mangas but that could change in the future. Over the years, multiple authors have written spin-offs on popular characters after the manga’s ending. Attack on Titan has received a spin-off that focuses on Levi Ackerman’s backstory while Tite Kubo’s Bleach got a spin-off manga ‘Burn The Witch’ that even got a movie.
Popular Jujutsu Kaisen Characters That Could Get A Spin-Off Manga
The possibility of Jujutsu Kaisen getting a spin-off is unknown as Gege Akutami loves to keep plans to themself. Nonetheless, there are multiple characters in the Kaisenverse whose backstory can be explored.
1. Yuta Okkotsu’s Experience In Africa
Yuta has established himself as one of the main characters in the series, having taken control of Gojo’s body to battle Sukuna in the Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 262. So far, the manga has vividly captured his development from a young sorcerer to a responsible hero. However, his time away from Japan wasn’t depicted in the series.
Okkotsu appeared in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 but returned only during the Culling Game Arc. He was absent from the Shibuya Incident arc yet there are no details about his time in Africa; the manga only mentions that he was busy training with Miguel. His experience and progress in a foreign country can be captured in a Jujutsu Kaisen spin-off manga.
2. Tengen’s Backstory As A Preacher And A Cursed Spirit
Even though they were changed into a Cursed Spirit, Tengen’s consciousness continues to exist due to their immortality. This makes them an intriguing character. A few pages could be dedicated to what happened to Tengen following their unsuccessful attempt at merging with the Star Plasma Vessel, Riko Amanai.
Tengen has been alive for centuries since the Nara period and laid the foundation for jujutsu sorcerers along with the Star worshippers. Therefore, a separate Jujutsu Kaisen spin-off can show his experiences as a sorcerer in the backdrop of ancient or medieval Japan. The manga can also go into detail on how immortality works in the Kaisenverse.
3. Hiromi Higurama’s Life As A Non-Sorcerer
Higurama is among the most memorable Jujutsu Kaisen characters, especially after his tag team with Yuji against Sukuna. He developed the ability to use Cursed Energy in the Culling Game arc. While the manga showed Hiromi’s transition from evil to a side hero, it didn’t expressly show his time as a non-sorcerer.
As a lawyer, Hiromi is an upholder of justice. He would do anything to prove someone is innocent and be troubled by the sight of a person wrongfully convicted. His experience as a ‘young’, struggling lawyer could be vividly described in a spin-off. It would be a change from the usual Cursed Energy battles, focusing on court cases.
4. Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto’s Friendship
The two Special Grade sorcerers, Gojo and Geto, had a deep bond since their time in Jujutsu High in 2006. They were even dubbed the “Strongest Duo” in the high school. However, several tragedies in Geto’s life made him despise the weak while Satoru was more inclined to help the weak.
Gojo and Geto’s last conversation showed their actual friendship. Even on the verge of death, Suguru didn’t hate the blue-eyed sorcerer. The two popular Jujutsu Kaisen characters deserve a spin-off that dives deep into their friendship, beginning from when they first met and how the two became close
5. Ryomen Sukuna’s Death In The Heian Period
Sukuna is currently the most powerful character in Jujutsu Kaisen. Yet, he does have a loss in his track record, dating back to the ‘Golden Age of Jujutsu’, which occurred a thousand years ago from the current timeline in the manga.
According to the villain’s backstory, Sukuna was a powerful sorcerer in the Heian Period. He single-handedly destroyed the elite Five Empty Generals of the Fujiwara Clan’s forces and instilled so much fear in people that they were forced to hold festivals in his honor. It took the combined efforts of powerful sorcerers to defeat Sukuna and they sealed his massive Cursed Energy into his cut-off fingers.
A Jujutsu Kaisen spin-off manga focusing on Sukuna’s battle and defeat in the Heian era will undoubtedly be a bestseller. It will name the legendary sorcerers that tamed the monster.
