Hito Hito no Mi or the Human-Human Fruit is a Zoan-type Devil Fruit in the anime or manga of One Piece. One of the most fascinating aspects of the world of One Piece is the existence of Devil Fruits, mysterious fruits that grant incredible powers to those who eat them. However, Devil Fruits also makes the user unable to swim and vulnerable to seawater, which is a huge disadvantage in a world dominated by oceans. In this article, we will discuss the various users of Hito Hito no Mi Devil Fruits in the world of One Piece.
The Hito Hito no Mi Devil Fruit Category In One Piece
The Hito Hito no Mi is a Zoan-type Devil Fruit but even among the Zoan fruits, it’s classified as a broad category of Zoans that grants the user human transformations instead of an animal or animal-human hybrid transformation.
Zoan Devil Fruits are a type of Devil Fruit that allows the user to transform into an animal or a hybrid of an animal and a human. In general, they beef up the user’s natural strength, endurance, stamina, and physical prowess. Zoan Devil Fruits can be classified into different categories based on the type of animal form they grant: Normal Zoan, Ancient Zoan, Mythical Zoan, and Artificial Zoan.
Currently, the world of One Piece only has 4 known Hito Hito no Mi users. Of these four, only one of them is a Normal Zoan, while the other three are Mythical Zoan types. Let’s go over each of their users in the order they were introduced into the story.
Tony Tony Chopper
Chopper is a blue-nosed reindeer hailing from Drum Island in the first half of Grand Line. He ate the Hito Hito no Mi Model: Hito (Human) which is a normal Zoan Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into up to 9 different forms of reindeer-human hybrid. In all of his forms, however, he can converse with both humans and animals due to him originally being an animal in the first place.
The fruit debuted in Chapter 138 of the manga or Episode 83 of the anime. It allows Chopper to gain human-like intelligence and transform into hybrid humanoid forms as and when he needs either to fight off a villain or to complete a task better suited for the human form.
Former Fleet Admiral Sengoku
Sengoku shocked us with the reveal of his Hito Hito no Mi Model: Daibutsu (Buddha) in the Marineford War. This is a mythical Zoan Devil Fruit that allows Sengoku to transform into a giant golden Buddha. In this form, he gains immense attack power and defense in addition to being able to use destructive shockwaves through his giant palms.
Unfortunately, that’s about the extent of our knowledge of this fruit. Generally, all Zoans have 3 transformations so this means there are still two other forms of Sengoku’s fruit that are unknown to the community. This fruit debuted in Chapter 571 of the manga and Episode 480 of the anime.
Onimaru is a komagikitsune– a species of wild fox unique to the land of Wano. He ate the Hito Hito no Mi Model: Onyudo which essentially allows him to transform into a large monk yokai. This mythical Zoan creature allows Onimaru to manifest and disappear at will just as a Japanese yokai (supernatural entity) would. Just as any other Human-Human fruit, it grants the creature human intelligence and the ability to comprehend human language.
His yokai form grants him strength and combat abilities like that of a supernatural human spirit. This fruit debuted in Chapter 936 of the manga and Episode 932 of the anime.
Monkey D. Luffy
Ironically the first character introduced in the story and the main protagonist of One Piece is the latest revealed Mythical Zoan user. Luffy’s real Devil Fruit is called the Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika but because of the threat and danger the knowledge of this fruit posed to the World Government, it was rebranded as the Gomu Gomu no Mi- a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit.
Nika, also known as the Sun God or the Warrior of Liberation is a legendary figure who once fought for and freed slaves while dancing, laughing, and singing with joy. His body had the properties of rubber and thus everyone believed it when the fruit was advertised as the Gum-Gum Fruit. The fruit allows Luffy to fight as freely as he can imagine. While it does take a huge toll on his stamina and maybe even drains his life force, it grants him cartoonish, Toonforce abilities that cannot be bound by logic or reason. The fruit debuted in Chapter 1 of the manga or Episode 4 of the anime but it was only recently revealed in Chapter 1044 to be the mythical Zoan, Sun God Nika fruit.
Eiichiro Oda was once asked in an SBS what would happen if a normal human ate Chopper’s fruit and he answered that the human who would eat it would become enlightened and thus become a superior human. While this doesn’t initially make much sense, the only two humans with the Hito Hito no Mi type devil fruits are those with Mythical Zoans that grant them the abilities of a God or divine figure- one could say this was Oda’s way of foreshadowing some future characters.
