Esports Awards 2024 was recently held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, following the conclusion of the inaugural EWC (Esports World Cup). The event saw many notable organizations and personalities in the esports or content creation space getting honored. One of the awardees was Samantha “Rivers” Rivera Trevino, who bagged the ‘Streamer of the Year’ award.
The news of the Mexican streamer winning the award also got various reactions from the audience. American YouTube Asmongold, aka Zack Rawrr, was among the people who were visibly disappointed that Rivera had won the award. In one of his recent streams, Zack argued that the likes of IShowSpeed or Kai should’ve won the award, as he was quoted saying,
I’m salty that it was obviously a diversity pick, because she’s a woman… and everybody knows it. It should’ve been Speed or Kai or … uh … CaseOh or like three other people. Everybody knows it. It’s f***king obnoxious … or … or Ibai [referring to Stream of the Year Award winner].”

He added,
“You put her up there, because she’s a female. It’s embarrassing and it’s patronizing. It’s not even a top female streamer either. It’s b*****it.”
Like Zach, many keyboard warriors on social media didn’t take the news well, as they sent hate toward Samy Rivera. The Streamer of the Year winner took to social media to address the matter, as she revealed the online hate she had to endure.
Samy ‘Rivers’ Rivera Faced Online Harassment And Death Threats After Winning Streamer of the Year Award
A couple of days after she was honored at Esports Awards 2024, Samy Rivera took to X to share how she has been facing online abuse and death threats after her win. In the post, Rivers revealed how she was the recipient of unjust hate simply for winning a voting-based award, as she wrote:
“the hate, harassment and death threats I’ve been getting in the past few days is not normal. I’m not a polemic profile, I always avoid trouble. This was an award that is won by voting, my community is known for always winning against huge profiles, its what they do. I asked them to please not vote for me in a tweet a while ago, I wrote it honestly and you can find it in my profile. It is not my fault and its not their fault either because they always want to support me in any way they can.”

In the post, Samy also referred to the comments made by the likes of Asmongold, which triggered their audiences to target her.
“people I looked up to saying horrible things for something I didn’t even ask for, people with huge amount of audience just repeating what they say, without even knowing anything about me, I hope you realize the kind of harm you can do. I’m sorry to Kai and Speeds communities but I had nothing to do with this. I hope you know the impact you have and realize that you’re only encouraging hate towards someone who has done nothing. In my 4 years of being on the internet, I had never experienced nothing like this and I hope no one has to go through this ever.”
It is worth noting that Rivers boasts over 6.3 million followers on Twitch and is among the most popular Spanish-speaking internet personalities out there. Due to her massive Latin American fan following, Samy Rivera has always been among the top contenders in her category. Ultimately, she outvoted IShowSpeed, Kai Cenat, XQC, CaseOh, and more to claim the prestigious award.
Besides Rivers, VALORANT won the ‘Esports Game of the Year’ award, which MLBB (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang) was honored as ‘Esports Mobile Game of the Year.’ Interestingly, the fan-favorite S8UL Esports was another famous name that outvoted its fellow nominees to win its third accolade in three successive Esports Awards events. S8UL won Esports Content Group of the Year at the 2024 edition.
