Assassin’s Creed Shadows World Premier Breaks The Franchise Record For Most Dislikes
The World Premier of Assassin’s Creed Shadows launched on May 16, 2024, has over 7 million views. It is an impressive feat, although not up to the standards set by Grand Theft Auto 6, which is slated for Fall 2025. The cinematic trailer gave a glimpse of feudal Japan while telling the story of the game’s dual protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe.
Despite being the most-viewed video in the list of videos for AC Shadows, the trailer has over 610,000 dislikes. It has broken the franchise record for most dislikes in a reveal trailer. Even the follow-up video to the trailer ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Who Are Naoe and Yasuke?’ has over 85,000 dislikes and a long list of angry fans in the comment section.
There are multiple reasons why the Assassin’s Creed Shadows reveal trailer became the most disliked in the series’ history. It has been over seven years since PC and console gamers got an Assassin’s Creed game, the last being Identity, and they wished to see what Shadows had to offer. Unfortunately, the World Premier turned out to be a full-fledged cinematic trailer rather than a gameplay trailer. Ubisoft even made the brave decision to open pre-orders without giving players any news of what they would be in for.
Fans are also bitter that Ubisoft chose Yasuke to be the protagonist. As per historical records, Yasuke was a man of African origin who was transported to Japan to work under warlord Nobunaga Oda. However, the backlash stems from the fact that Ubisoft chose an African to be the main character, most of whose history hasn’t been documented, instead of being inspired by legendary characters like Hattori Hanzō.
The pricing of Shadows is another reason for the negative reception of the game. Even Asmongold was shocked to hear the price of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which is around $130. Ubisoft also plans to make a Battle Pass and DLC content so some of the content will be locked behind a paywall.
