Highlights:
* Black Myth Wukong and Elden Ring are two role-playing games renowned for their combat difficulty.
* Multiple factors need to be taken into consideration when deciding which game is more challenging.
Black Myth Wukong’s difficulty has been compared with some of the most challenging games, including Elden Ring. Both titles feature an interesting combat system with melee, spells, and summons, alongside giving players options to experiment with different builds. FromSoftware has set the benchmark for rigorous combat that relies on muscle memory and execution while Black Myth Wukong surpasses expectations with a key omission of the parry mechanic.
Black Myth Wukong vs Elden Ring: Which Has A More Unforgiving & Dangerous World?
Soulslike games, in general, are designed to be taxing on players. The dark fantasy world in Elden Ring is created in a way that players can barely catch their breath. Enemies and bosses jump at the Tarnished at every second area and they have to be careful about their footing because fall damage has reset the progress of many brave warriors.
Speaking of Black Myth Wukong, which is rooted in Chinese folklore, a part of the experience is the adventure. You can be surprised by Buddha’s Right Hand and the odd lurking enemy but there is ample time to just roam around the world and even see Wukong meditate to get XP. Beginners can get settled in the virtual world because the fights aren’t as stressful as compared to Elden Ring.
Survivability is more crucial in Elden Ring as compared to Black Myth Wukong. If players are killed, they lose Runes, which are required to increase attributes like Strength and Intelligence. Black Myth Wukong is an easier experience because the Destined One loses neither XP nor any collected materials. Yes, losing a boss fight will be frustrating but one can try to win repeatedly. In Elden Ring, the stakes of a defeat are much higher.
Additionally, fast travel in BM:W is much more expansive. Players can teleport to different locations as well as sub-locations by using Keeper Shrines. Elden Ring is a different case altogether. Hayao Miyazaki had carefully mapped the checkpoints and fast travel locations. Dying in the soulslike game is punishing because the bonfires/savepoints are deliberately ‘rare’, further specifying the importance of survival.
The world in Elden Ring is more perilous for players as compared to Black Myth Wukong. Each battle in FromSoftware’s title requires gamers to be at their best, or else, risk losing their hard-earned progress.
Is Combat In Black Myth Wukong More Difficult Than Elden Ring?
In Black Myth Wukong, players of all skill levels have to get used to the combat. They have to regularly improve and equip gears that suit their playstyle since there is no difficulty setting. Studying and memorizing the boss patterns is crucial for winning fights, similar to Elden Ring.
Unlike the Tarnished, Wukong cannot steamroll enemies with an overpowered build. The ‘Spellbinder’ trick can heavily damage an enemy, especially after equipping a fully-upgraded Pilgrim Set, but the bosses would still require a few hits to be defeated. This makes the combat in Black Myth Wukong tougher than Elden Ring. The latter gives more options in builds while certain summons make the combat much easier. Over the years, the Elden Ring community has come up with different tricks to defeat the most powerful bosses. Players can even one-shot bosses.
Parrying in Elden Ring can be both rewarding and disastrous. During a failed parry, there is a high chance that a boss’ combos would kill the Tarnished instantly. Meanwhile, Black Myth Wukong is not the average hack-and-slash game. It doesn’t have a parry system so the combat is more challenging. Players have to sidestep each attack. A notable example is the Erlang boss fight, in which one has to dodge after anticipating an incoming melee or magic attack.
Black Myth Wukong’s combat can be considered more difficult than Elden Ring as the latter gives more options in builds and spells. However, in both games, the ‘difficulty’ is subjective to the player. They can test themselves by trying to complete either of the games with the Starter build or by using no spells (the hardcore Elden Ring experience).
