The Spirit of the Samurai is the debut title of Murcia-based studio Digital Mind in conjunction with publisher Kwalee. It is a side-scrolling action-adventure title featuring three playable characters, including an adorable samurai cat. Set in Japan, the game also uses 2D stop-motion and merges it with high-quality gory cutscenes to create an immersive experience. The Spirit of the Samurai was announced in June last year but the launch window was revealed recently.
The Spirit of the Samurai Release Date Trailer Features The Gameplay Of All Three Playable Characters
According to the latest trailer revealed during the Gamescom 2024 livestream, The Spirit of the Samurai will be launched in Fall 2024. We are already into the fourth quarter of the year. The developers are aiming to release the game in October or November on Steam and EPIC Games Store.
The Spirit of the Samurai Release Date trailer briefly features the gameplay of all three characters. In this story about three extraordinary spirits, the protagonists are a skilled samurai named Takeshi, a spirit named Kodama who reminds one of baby Groot from Marvel, and Chisai, a warrior cat. Players will need to complete different objectives while controlling these characters in the stop-motion adventure.
Inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore, The Spirit of the Samurai begins with the Oni (supernatural creatures) overrunning the land with their army of the undead. Takeshi and the other two protagonists are tasked with saving the land. According to the news on the Steam page, the game will feature mythical creatures like the Tengu and the Jorogumo, which is a type of yokai.
As seen in The Spirit of the Samurai Release Date trailer, the warrior cat Chisai coordinates her claw attacks with the samurai to defeat the undead. She also possesses more mobility than Takeshi and can move at a rapid pace in the side-scrolling adventure. Moreover, it is the cat who seemingly finds the spirit Kodama, the third playable character.
The announcement trailer featured Kodama conversing with the spirit of the forest, a fox named Kitsune, who revealed itself to be a “witness and a part” of their journey. In the latest trailer, the warrior spirit can be seen using a katana. Apart from the blade, players will have access to a spear and a bow but those might be exclusive to Takeshi.
Each character in the game can interact with the surroundings differently, adding to the intrigue of the world based on Japanese folklore. The Spirit of the Samurai features caves, cemeteries, villages, all crawling with undead monsters and demons. Players can currently wishlist the game on Steam.
