Ever since the beginning of the Kaiju No. 8 manga, we have seen that Kafka Hibino’s dream has been to fight alongside his childhood friend Mina Ashiro. He was only able to get into the Kaiju Defense Forces at the age of 32 after multiple failed attempts. But both his and Mina’s dreams came true when they started battling Kaiju No. 9 as a team.
Mina And Kafka Have Wanted To Fight Kaijus Together Since Their Childhood
The protagonist of Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 manga, Kafka Hibino, and the Defense Force’s Third Division Captain Mina Ashiro, go way back. The two of them used to be childhood friends, and Kafka was a few years older than Mina. After their town was destroyed by a Kaiju attack, the two young friends vowed to become Kaiju Defense Forces members and kill as many monsters as possible. During this time, Kafka was Mina’s rock and said that he would always remain by her side. The two young kids decided that Kafka would become a captain in the organization and Mina would be his vice-captain. Their dream was to fight side by side against powerful Kaiju and save as many lives as they could,
However, life had other plans for the friends. Mina turned out to be a genius fighter who easily got into the Defense Forces and became captain of the third division in no time. Kafka, on the other hand, gave up on his dream after failing the Entrance Exam multiple times. He became a member of Monster Sweeper Inc., which cleaned up monster remains after the Defense Forces killed the Kaiju. In the end, he was able to pass the Defense Forces Entrance Exam with the help of a young hopeful named Reno Ichikawa. But things took an unexpected turn when an unknown Kaiju forced itself into Kafkaa’s mouth, giving him the ability to change into an immensely powerful Daikaiju at will. Kafka became an officer of the Defense Force and tried to hide his kaiju identity from everyone else with the help of Ichikawa and Kikoru.
Kafka And Mina Fight Together In Kaiju No. 8 Against Kaiju No. 9
Both Mina and Kafka were extremely happy when the latter joined the Force. This meant that they were one step closer to realizing their childhood dream. But before they could fight side by side, they faced a lot of ups and downs. Not only was Kafka’s kaiju identity revealed, but later Isao Shinomiya also died at the hands of Kaiju No. 9. In the end, they were not able to fight as equals until recently.
In chapter 105 of the manga, we see how Kafka rescues Mina from the formidable Kaiju no. 9, who was trying to consume the captain. Ichikawa and the members of the defense forces keep the other kaiju from destroying the city. Mina wakes up and she and Kafka finally begin battling the immensely powerful kaiju in front of them. Although faced with a dire situation, the two can’t help but feel good about being able to fulfill their lifelong dream. It was an emotional moment which not only affected the other characters but also the readers.
Since the two fighting as comrades was one of the main plot points of the story, fans were glad to see it finally come true after more than a hundred chapters. However, it seems that their combined strength might not be enough to defeat the overwhelmingly strong Kaiju no. 9. In chapter 111, Kafka transforms into his berserk form and Mina brings out her special weapon, which can easily defeat a Daikaiju. As the manga nears its end, the result of the final battle will depend on whether the duo can eliminate the biggest threat to humanity.
