Most commonly seen when installing an update, League of Legends Error Code 004 can occur due to several reasons including network disconnection, corrupted configuration files, inadequate hard drive storage, improper DNS settings, and Antivirus Software settings. The error message mentions that the “patching failed” and one could restart the client to try to log in again.
Before moving on to the fixes, check the League of Legends server status and your own WiFi network speed. A network/server problem on either side would have been the cause of the disrupted download. A few usual fixes for League of Legends Error 004 are running the application as Administrator on the second attempt and momentarily disabling the Antivirus software.

If the League of Legends Error 004 reappears on the screen even after restarting, apply the following fixes:
Free Storage Space In The Hard Drive
While installing an update, League of Legends could automatically stop the process and show the Error 004 message if your device has insufficient drive storage. Ensure that the drive which has the game has enough space to install the update:-
- Open the File Explorer on your PC by pressing and holding Windows and E keys.
- Select This PC and then choose the drive that has League of Legends (default is C: drive)
- Right-click on the drive and select Properties.
- A new window will open. it will automatically be on the General tab.
- From that tab, select the Disk Cleanup option. Subsequently, check the files you want to delete.
- Press OK to confirm that the files need to be deleted.
A minimum of 10 GB storage space is recommended for each LoL update. Delete files accordingly.
Delete The Configuration Files For League of Legends
Corrupted configuration files are another reason why players might be facing League of Legends Error 004 repeatedly. Remedy the problem by following these steps:-
- Open the League of Legends folder from the File Explorer.
- Select the Config folder.
- Search for the game.cfg file and subsequently delete it.
- Head back to the LoL folder. Then, one needs to select multiple sub-folders in the order: RADS → projects → league_client → releases.
- The release folder will contain the latest version of the game. Delete it.
After the selected configuration files are deleted, relaunch League of Legends and install the update. The LoL Error 004 is most likely to have been fixed.
Switch To A Different Google DNS
Given that League of Legends Error Code 004 can result from network issues, changing the DNS setting can resolve the problem. Here’s how to access the setting:-
- Navigate to the PC Settings by using the Search bar.
- Select Network & Internet and then choose Status.
- Click Change adapter options.
- Right-click on the network connection that is being used and choose Properties.
- While at the Networking tab, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
- Click Properties. This will open a menu from which one can select the DNS server addresses.
- Set the Preferred DNS server as 8.8.8.8 and the Alternate DNS server as 8.8.4.4.
League of Legends Error 004 can be problematic but can be easily solved with a few changes to the PC settings. Other notable problems that arise due to faulty connection to corrupted files include League of Legends Error Code 900.
