The highly anticipated fighting game Mortal Kombat 1 is now globally available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. With the game’s release, details on the download size for Mortal Kombat 1 have been revealed, and it’s a considerable chunk of storage space.
Mortal Kombat 1 Download Size and Storage Required
According to reports, Mortal Kombat 1 will require around 140GB of storage space on Xbox Series X|S consoles. This makes up about 17.4% of the total usable space on the Xbox Series X 1TB SSD. On PlayStation 5 consoles with a smaller 667GB of usable space, it would take up around 21% of the storage.
The install size is over 50GB larger than the previous game Mortal Kombat 11. The base game of MK11 takes up 48.8GB, while with all additional content installed, it totals around 91GB. So MK1 is adding nearly another 50GB on top of that at 140 GB.
For those with the 512GB Xbox Series S, the install size is slightly smaller at 101GB due to the lack of 4K textures. But it still makes up over 27% of the usable space on the entry-level next-gen Xbox.
Making Room for Mortal Kombat 1

With Mortal Kombat 1 eating up so much storage real estate, players will likely have to do some juggling of their game library. The massive install size is thanks to high-resolution textures, story mode content, and more packed into the game at launch.
Players can uninstall certain parts of the game like story mode or 4K textures to free up some space. Removing story mode can reportedly save over 25GB. However, the core multiplayer component will still require a big chunk of storage. Having games with 100GB+ install sizes is becoming more common with new AAA titles. As games embrace higher-resolution assets and beefier modes, storage demands increase. So upgrading to a larger SSD may be necessary for some players to keep a healthy library installed.
Preload Available
With preloading, the game files can be downloaded ahead of time. Then the unlock occurs on launch day. So players with slower internet speeds may want to start downloading MK1 soon. Just be aware it will take up a sizable chunk of your console’s storage in the process. The return of Mortal Kombat comes at the cost of a sizable install footprint. Make sure to clear sufficient storage or upgrade your SSD if needed to join the gory fights.
