Why One Piece Is Going On Break Again
The first time One Piece took a month-long break was after the end of the Marineford Saga during the 2-year timeskip. Oda needed a vacation and to tend to his health- thus he resumed the story after having the Strawhats train for 2-years off-screen and coming back to reunite in Sabaody after that. During this time he took a month-long break in real life to both take a break himself and give his fans a sense of time’s passing.
The last time Oda took a month-long hiatus was after the end of the Wano Saga which ended the climactic battle between the Ninja-Pirate-Samurai Alliance and the two Yonkos- Kaido and Big Mom. He had also said in a public statement about his hiatus that he wanted to take this opportunity to streamline the upcoming Final Saga of One Piece.

The current break comes as a sudden news but not an unexpected one. While no official reasons have been given, it’s speculated that it is because of the recent death of manga legend Akira Toriyama. Oda was a huge fan of Toriyama and even looked upon him as his mentor and friend. It’s no surprise that he might choose to take a break to mourn his passing and attend his funeral.
