The latest update of Aka Aakasaka’s manga was undoubtedly one of the most gut-wrenching chapters yet. Even though readers had an inkling that Aqua Hoshino might not live to see the world he has created for Ruby, nobody was ready to say goodbye. After killing Hikaru Kamiki, the protagonist drowned in the river alongside his father. And it seems Tsukuyomi is his final companion.

Oshi No Ko Chapter 163 Explained Aqua’s Doubts About His Identity
In a vision, Aqua sees what his life could have been like if Amamiya, Sarina, and Ai didn’t die. As he looks at the Doctor crying while cheering for Ai and Sarina, he asks the Crow Girl if this is a dream. Tsukuyomi replies that it’s a dream for him because this is the reality Aqua had wanted to live in. As he looks at the life he could never have, Aqua asks who he actually is, Goro Amamiya or Aqua Hoshino. Fans learn that since he received the memories of Dr. Amamiya, Aqua never really felt like his own person.
Tsukuyomi says that even though he was a reincarnation, it was not Aqua’s whole identity. He inherited the doctor’s memories but also received his genes from Ai and Kamiki. He was forced to carry the guilt of not being able to save Sarina and Ai since he was a child. He was angry at the injustice his mother received and wanted to protect his sister Ruby from the same fate. He dedicated his life to this cause and in the end, sacrificed himself for it. But everything he did was as Aqua Hoshino, who was his own person.
Is Aqua Hoshino Actually Dead?
In chapter 162, Kamiki drowns in the river after hitting his head on a rock. Aqua, who had stabbed himself to make it look like a confrontation gone wrong, also starts to lose consciousness. In chapter 163, it seems he is talking to Tsukuyomi in the afterlife. While explaining how he did a selfless act to save his sister at the age of 18, the Crow Girl hugs him and starts to cry. In the final panel, she says, “That was all you, Aqua Hoshino” but the only thing that remains in front of her is his Ai Hoshino keychain and Aqua is nowhere to be found.
Even though it was not confirmed, the ending of the latest chapter alludes to Aqua being dead. A lot of readers already predicted the protagonist might die, but it still came as a huge shock to the fandom. Whether or not the beloved Aqua Hoshino is dead will be revealed in the upcoming issue. With only three more chapters left of the manga, people are not too hopeful about the survival of the protagonist. His death will also have a massive effect on not only his sister Ruby, but Kana, Akane, and others who loved him. With Tsukuyomi already mourning his loss, the chances of Aqua Hoshino making a comeback are, unfortunately, slim to none.
