The introduction of PS5 Slim is going to finally do away with the four-inch broad PlayStation 5 models. Much slimmer and sleeker than the original digital console, the Slim model will be less bulk and more about performance. It may even replace the OG PlayStation 5 after a few months from its release but all such speculations are just part of the hype train.
It must be noted that the PS5 Slim is a part of rumors and no official announcement has been made by Sony. Nonetheless, several reports and leaks have revealed some interesting features for the apparent upcoming console. The Slim version of PlayStation 5 is suspected to have a USB port, slightly better specs than the original but less ray tracing from the Pro, and a cost price that will be lower than the normal console version when it was first released.
PS5 Slim: Release Date & Price
Looking back at the history of this popular console, the PlayStation 3 was launched in November 2006 and the Slim version was subsequently released in September 2009. The same three-year gap followed when it came to the debut of PlayStation 4 in November 2013 and the Slim version in September 2016.
PlayStation 5 hit the market in 2020. While it was heavily suspected that a PS5 Slim model would follow it in September 2023, that obviously didn’t pan out. The release date for PlayStation 5 Slim is now thought to be later this year along with the release of PlayStation 5 Pro, as per a leaked document. Sony could be targeting the Christmas holidays for a jolly good debut.
As per the leaked legal document of Microsoft and FTC:
“The entry-level versions of the current Xbox and Switch are offered at the same price point ($299.99), and the Xbox Series S is sold for $50 less than the Switch OLED model ($349,99). PlayStation likewise sells a less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99, and is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point.”
Speaking of the pricing, PS5 Slim is expected to cost around $299.99 USD upon release. The price could jump due to the rumored addition of a detachable disc drive for more game storage but it will be at a maximum of $50.
PS Slim Leaked Information
While some rumors suggest that PS5 Slim will actually be ‘slim’ and will have a portion of the original size cut down for a more handy one, Insider Gaming reported that PS5 Slim will just be a small revamp of the original. It will be identical to the original but with a detachable disc drive. Along with it, the development of a wireless audio device for PlayStation 5 was mentioned.
Footage of PlayStation 5 Slim was also leaked by BWE Dev on X. The site mentioned that the console will be released in September this year but we have had no official statements from Sony so far. Take the footage and report with a grain of salt.
BWE also mentioned that the PS5 Slim will be “about 5cm or so shorter” rather than have a decreased width. The slot for Dual USB-C is in the front and it has a curve in the middle with small vents and black slits on each side of the case to avoid overheating.
Adding to the belief of the existence of a PS Slim is a subtle change that dates back to July. Amazon’s previously listed ‘PlayStation 5’ is now changed to ‘PlayStation 5 Standard Console’ – a subtle hint that Sony might have been preparing for the launch of a new console.
