A detailed look at the tournament

Organised by GGWP Esports, the Lunar New Year 2023 Dota 2 tournament concluded yesterday 13th February. The tournament featured a $19,750 prize pool and a total of 10 teams were seen competing. The location for the tournament was in the Asia region, as you all know the tournament followed 3 stages mainly Closed Qualifier, Group Stage and Playoffs. Team Saiyan stepped into the tournament with a win in the Closed qualifier, later they somehow managed to secure the 6th position in Group Stage and made it to the Playoffs. On a contradictory note, Team Flow remained on top of the Group Stage. Team Saiyan faced the Group Stage topper in the Grand Final and won the game with a flawless 3-0 victory over them.  

A look at the tournament’s format

A total of 7 teams were invited while 3 teams made it from the Closed qualifier which was played on 16th January. The Closed Qualifier featured a Single-elimination bracket and had a total of 6 teams, the matches were best of 3 games.

The Group Stage began on 18th January and ran till 3rd February where a total of 10 teams competed in a single round-robin format and matches were of the best of 2 game series. 8 teams advanced to the playoffs.

The Playoffs started on the 5th of February and concluded yesterday which included a Double-elimination bracket and all matches were the best of 3 games. The Grand Final had a Best of 5 game series. 

Team Saiyan’s clean sweep Grand Final victory

The Grand Final of the Lunar New Year 2023 was played out yesterday, it was once again a face-off between the two teams Team Saiyan and Team Flow. Previously in the Upper Bracket Round 2, these teams met each other, and Team Saiyan won the game by 2-0 in the best of 3 games. This time it was the Grand Final which had a Best of 5 game series. Let’s move in towards the detailed match recapitulation of the Grand Final.

Team Saiyan vs Team Flow

(Best of 5 game score: 3-0)

  •   Game 1: The lineup of heroes for Team Saiyan included Riki, Mirana, Tiny, Naga Siren and Death Prophet. Team Flow picked Primal Beast, Snapfire, Disruptor, Faceless Void and Storm Spirit. The game was played for 39 minutes and 27 seconds and Team Saiyan secured their victory and took the lead.         
  •   Game 2: Team Saiyan’s Hero lineup this time had Dragon Knight, Nature’s Prophet, Shadow Demon, Centaur Warrunner and Batrider. Team Flow’s Hero lineup included Mirana, Kunkka, Timbersaw, Shadow Fiend and Sand King. The game went on for 31 minutes, Team Flow was again disrupted as Team Saiyan claimed the win.
  •   Game 3: Team Saiyan after their back-to-back victories were confident enough to secure the title. For the 3rd game, they picked a Hero lineup of Lina, Tiny, Mars, Keeper of the Light and Kunkka. Team Flow’s Hero lineup this time had Nature’s Prophet, Pangolier, Rubick, Doom and Pudge. After a game of 38 minutes and 48 seconds, Team Saiyan emerged as the winner.

Conclusion

With this performance, Team Saiyan won the majority of the matches and claimed the series with 2 more games to spare. The prize pool was shared accordingly and Team Saiyan accumulated a total of $10,000, Team Flow with a 2nd  position finish got $4,000. UD Vessuwan received $2,000 as they got placed in 3rd position, 496 Gaming secured 4th position and got $1,000. Spawn Team and LBZS were placed 5th – 6th and got $750 each, DAWN Gaming and Team Mystique got placed 7th – 8th and received $500 each and Purple Paradox finished 9th and got $250. The knights forfeited the mid-way and did not finish the game.
