Terra Branford aka Tina is the main female protagonist of Final Fantasy VI
Due to her special ability to natively utilise magic, Terra starts the game as a soldier for the Gestahlian Empire, who used her to advance their experiments with Magitek.
A human woman named Madeline and an Esper father named Maduin gave birth to Terra in the Esper World. When the Gestahlian Empire stormed the region and seized Maduin, he and Madeline were mistakenly flung out of the Esper World with Terra. Madeline was killed by the emperor Gestahl, who also snatched the infant Terra from her.
Terra is a young woman of eighteen with long hair pulled back into a ponytail, a red dress around her waist with a purple or pink belt, red boots, and red bracers. Terra appears in concept art with blonde hair, floral-patterned tights, and a cape, as well as a pink hair ribbon. Terra has green hair and purple shoulder pads.
Terra’s hesitations are heightened by her confusion, anxiety, and forgetfulness at the start of Final Fantasy VI. She has no knowledge of who she is or the purpose of the conflict in which she has been involved. She is cautious of joining the Returners since the limited memories she has suggest she was a willing soldier of the Empire, which makes her uncomfortable and makes her question if she belongs with them and can trust them.
Terra is a versatile character since she can use most weapons and armour, including heavy armour and wizard robes. With the ability to cast spells like Fire, Flare and Meltdown, Terra is typically connected with the Fire element. She is skilled in a range of offensive magic, although she specialises in spells with a fire theme.
Behind the scenes
The character that would become Terra Branford was originally intended to be a male half-Esper in his early 20s, but was later designed as Terra, age 18. She was originally intended to vanish with the espers at the game’s conclusion, but the production team determined that would be “going too far,” so they instead made her lose merely her magical abilities.
