The first issue of the anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s popular horror manga series was bizarre and terrifying. Not only did it perfectly capture the peculiar nature of Ito’s work but also set the pace for what’s to come. Fans saw how Shuichi’s father’s obsession with spirals ultimately led to his death and caused his mother to go insane. On the other hand, Kirie’s classmate Azami was overwhelmed by her own spiral.

Uzumaki Episode 1 Recap
A girl named Kirie Goshima starts to talk about her hometown Kurouzu-cho and a strange curse that befell the unfortunate citizens. Kirie goes to the station to receive her boyfriend Shuichi Saito from the train station and learns how his father has become completely obsessed with spirals. Due to the immense stress his father’s condition is putting on him, Shuichi starts to notice spirals everywhere in the town and asks Kirie if she wants to leave this place with him.
Soon after, Shuichi’s father’s delusion turns lethal when he forces his body to take the shape of a spiral, breaking all of his bones. During his cremation, the smoke from his burning body turns into a spiral and descends into the Dragonfly Pond. After watching how her husband died, Shuichi’s mother becomes so scared of spirals that she can’t stand the sight of them. Her condition forces Shuichi to admit her to a hospital. Back at school, Kirie notices that a beautiful girl in her class called Azami has a crescent moon scar on her forehead.
Kirie takes Azami to meet Shuichi, but her boyfriend is terrified of her classmate and runs away. Later, Azami chases down Shuichi and asks why he is so against her when every boy is obsessed with her. He points to her scar, which now looks like a small spiral, and says she is cursed. Later, Azami manipulates a guy in her class to bring Shuichi to him. But the spiral in her forehead turns into a large vortex and devours the guy. Shuichi and Kirie watch in horror as the spiral then consumes her own body.
Uzumaki Episode 2 Predictions
After watching what happened to Azami, Shuichi will go into seclusion and not leave his house at all. Kirie’s father, who was a friend of Shuichi’s father, will also become obsessed with spirals and try to incorporate them into his pottery. A couple will start to show weird signs when their parents try to separate them. Most importantly, Kirie’s own long golden hair will start to curl into spirals, which will really worry Shuichi. There is much more wackiness in store for horror fans in the next issue of Uzumaki.
