Spider-Man 2 brings back the fast-paced combat and web-slinging action on consoles this month. Insomniac Games’ release is the sequel to the 2018 game about Peter Parker and the follow-up to Miles Morales’ story from 2020.
On October 20, 2023, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released on PlayStation 5. It is now exclusively available for next-gen consoles because of its large world and enhanced visual graphics. As such, a Spider-Man 2 PlayStation 4 release seems unlikely.
Why Spider-Man 2 will not be available on PlayStation 4?
PlayStation 5 operates on an AMD Radeon RDNA 2.0 graphic processing unit, which boasts processing power equal to RTX 2060-2070. The device also has 2.23GHz Ray Tracing Acceleration for better lighting details. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 has an outdated RDNA 1.0 GPU and no ray tracing, thereby making it impossible to support the graphics and size of Spider-Man 2.

President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan did mention that the creative team at Insomniac Games have given their best to bring the Spidey action to life. They have massively improved the lifelike graphics, intricate details, and flashy combat mechanics, and the world is double the size of that which was seen in PS4’s Marvel’s Spider-Man game.
Ryan, while speaking to Famitsu, noted that the developers had to “focus on maximizing the functions of the PS5 and creating the best works.” Thus, they had pushed Spider-Man 2 up to the standards of the next-gen console. The chances of a PS4 release seem nill at the moment.
With the massive shift in focus to next-gen consoles in the past few years, last-gen console users can only bite their lip. The same is the case for Xbox users and PC users, who will get a taste of the game supposedly after a year. Sony has made sure that PlayStation 5 stands out from the rest this October.
